Our editorial approachChoose by measurements, not another brand's letter
Use the chart linked to the exact Merino.tech style, then check how its measurements were taken. A medium in a familiar brand is a useful reference, not a size conversion. Chest, waist, hips, length and intended fit can point in different directions, especially when a set must fit both your upper and lower body.
We have not fitted these garments on a test panel. This guide explains a measurement and decision process using the official charts checked October 22, 2026. It does not label the entire range universally true to size, small or large.
Identify the chart's measurement type
A body chest measurement goes around the torso. A flat garment chest width measures one side of a laid-flat top. Those numbers cannot be compared directly. As an illustrative example, a 20-inch flat width is roughly 40 inches around before allowing for construction or stretch; it is not a recommendation for a 40-inch chest.
A single chart can also contain different types of dimension. Shoulder width, sleeve length and a stated chest range may not use the same method. Read the diagram and labels. If the source does not make the method clear, ask the merchant before choosing.

Take a small set of useful body measurements
Measure over the thin clothing or underwear you expect beneath the layer. Keep the tape level and comfortably in contact rather than pulling it tight. Record units alongside the numbers so a later comparison does not mix centimeters and inches. For tops, chest and the way the shoulder area moves matter; for bottoms, waist, hips and leg length help describe the shape you need.
Measure again if a result seems inconsistent. The goal is useful information, not forcing yourself into a size you normally buy. Send the merchant the measurements and intended product when asking for help.
Compare with a garment you already like
Lay a comfortable similar garment flat without stretching it and follow the same measurement points as the new style's diagram. Note chest width, back length and sleeve length for a top. For bottoms, record waist width in the specified state, rise if relevant, inseam and the leg opening.
This comparison is most useful when the old garment serves the same purpose. A relaxed sweatshirt is a poor template for a next-to-skin thermal. A favorite base layer worn beneath the same outer clothes is a better reference. Record whether your old garment has stretched or shrunk over time.
Treat a set as two separate fit decisions
First check the top, then check the bottom. If the chest suggests one size and the waist or hips another, do not average the letters and hope. Check whether the merchant offers separate pieces or another combination that avoids compromising one half.
Length matters as much as circumference. A bottom that gathers heavily beneath a boot can be awkward even when its waistband fits. A top that looks comfortable standing still may expose the lower back when bending. Identify which mismatch is important before deciding whether a different size, style or buying configuration solves it.
Use a deliberate indoor fit check
Subject to the seller's rules, try the unused garment with the other clothing you will wear. Reach forward and upward, bend, sit, and bring your knees toward the positions used while walking or traveling. Check the collar beneath a zipped jacket and cuffs beneath your usual sleeves.
Look for pulling, pressure, bunching or unwanted exposure. A size can be technically wearable while remaining unsuitable for a long day. Keep tags, packaging and bonus items intact while deciding. Do not wash or wear the garment outdoors as a sizing experiment and assume the return remains eligible.
Handle between-size decisions specifically
Ask what you need more of: chest room, shoulder movement, body length, waist accommodation or a different neck opening. Sizing up may change several dimensions without solving the one that bothers you. A different cut can be more useful than another letter in the same cut.
For a merchant query, provide the style name, your key measurements, the chart entry causing uncertainty and how you plan to wear the garment. Ask whether the listed dimension is a body range or an unstretched garment measurement. Save the response with your order information.
Check returns before committing to the fit
The current refund policy places conditions on unused items, tags and packaging, and has hygiene and final-sale exclusions. Read the policy for the precise item you are considering. Do not extend a base-layer return assumption to socks or underwear.
If a delivered garment differs materially from the ordered size or appears defective, photograph the label and issue and contact the merchant. Q&A / THE USEFUL ANSWERS
Common questions.
Does Merino.tech run small?
We do not have a representative fit study that supports one answer for the whole catalog. Check the exact style's dimensions and compare with a similar garment you like.
Should I automatically size up?
No. Identify the dimension you need to change. A different size may not solve a collar, shoulder, length or cut problem.
Can I double a flat garment width?
It gives an approximate circumference before stretch, but does not establish an appropriate body size or desired ease. Use the chart's own method.
What if the top and bottom need different sizes?
Check separate pieces or ask the merchant about available combinations. A matching set is useful only when both halves fit.
Can I wash the item before deciding?
Check the seller's rules first. The inspected refund policy requires eligible goods to be unused and retain required tags and packaging; do not assume washed goods qualify.
