Our editorial approachRead the label before choosing a cycle
Wash merino according to the actual garment's label, not one universal recipe. Some wool products permit machine washing or tumble drying; others need a different routine. The instruction belongs to the exact item, including its construction and treatment.
The checked Merino.tech 250 set specifies cold gentle washing, mild or wool-specific detergent and flat drying, with no fabric softener or bleach. This guide combines that example with Woolmark guidance checked October 22, 2026. It does not promise zero shrinkage or a measured number of years of wear.
Inspect and sort first
Read every item's label, including separate pieces in a set or a bundled accessory. Check pockets and closures, then look for existing snags, open seams or marks before a routine load. Sorting prevents the care decision from being made accidentally when a household wash reaches the machine.
Separate compatible instructions and colors. Do not put merino in a hotter wash merely because there is spare space. If a new garment appears defective, contact the seller before cleaning; washing can affect both handling of the issue and return eligibility.

Choose a suitable detergent
Woolmark recommends mild, neutral detergent suitable for wool. Check the cleaning product's instructions as well as the garment label, and use the advised dose for the load. Adding extra is not automatically a precaution, and a detergent name does not establish whether every optional laundry additive is appropriate.
For the selected Merino.tech example, omit bleach and fabric softener as instructed. Avoid strong spot treatments or improvised mixtures without checking compatibility. Aim for a repeatable routine rather than a collection of unsupported cleaning tricks.
Use permitted machine settings deliberately
If machine washing is allowed, select the stated temperature and gentle program rather than assuming every delicate button means the same thing. Turn the checked Merino.tech pieces inside out as directed, use like colors and exclude incompatible items from the load.
Do not transfer another brand's program automatically. Our Smartwool Classic Thermal references permit a different wash and dryer routine from the selected Merino.tech set. Both contain merino, but their own labels are the instructions that matter. Pause and ask about the model when the information is unclear.
Hand washing still needs a method
Hand washing is not permission to use any water temperature, soak time or rubbing technique. Follow the label and suitable detergent instructions. Set up a basin and drying area beforehand so you do not need to improvise with a soaked garment afterward.
Handle the piece gently rather than twisting or scrubbing aggressively to finish faster. If its label does not support a treatment you are considering, ask the maker. A crowded hotel bathroom or rushed evening can make laundry impractical; carrying another clean top may be the better plan.
Dry according to the garment's instruction
Woolmark recommends flat drying for relevant knitwear unless the item permits tumble drying. The selected Merino.tech example calls for laying flat. Use a suitable clean surface or rack that supports the piece, and arrange its shape without stretching it to a new size.
Do not substitute a radiator or an unapproved dryer setting when time is short. A thin edge feeling dry does not prove the whole item is ready. We have not measured these garments' drying times, so no one-hour or overnight guarantee is provided.
Decide whether washing is needed
Inspect for soil and consider activity, hygiene needs and the condition of the item. Airing may be useful in some situations, but it is not a substitute for cleaning when cleaning is needed. A slogan about odor resistance is not a fixed schedule for every person and garment.
Plan enough clean clothing to wash and dry items properly. Constantly rushing one top through a trip can be less workable than carrying a modest spare. Underwear hygiene, travel conditions and personal comfort belong in the decision; one wear-count rule does not answer them all.
Keep a record when a change matters
If fit changes concern you, note the style, size and label, and take consistent measurements when the item is dry and relaxed. Record the program, detergent and drying method. Measurements taken at different points or under different conditions are difficult to compare.
A home record is not a laboratory study or a defect rate, but it helps describe a specific issue to the seller. Do not wash outside the label instructions to test a guarantee. Keep the garment appropriately clean and dry in storage and ask for help when a label or problem remains unclear.
Q&A / THE USEFUL ANSWERS
Common questions.
Can I machine wash merino wool?
Only if the actual label permits it. Use its stated temperature and program rather than a universal merino rule.
Can Merino.tech go in a dryer?
The selected checked Merino.tech garments specify flat drying. Follow the delivered label; do not borrow another product's tumble-dry permission.
Which detergent is suitable?
Use a mild wool-suitable detergent compatible with the label and follow its dosing instructions. The selected Merino.tech directions exclude bleach and softener.
Should I wash after each wear?
Consider soil, hygiene, conditions and the label. Odor resistance does not guarantee a fixed number of wears.
Does cold washing guarantee no shrinkage?
No. Follow all item-specific instructions, including handling and drying. No zero-shrinkage guarantee is made.
